Amtrak Station
Bakersfield, CA
All Aboard! Designing for the sometimes extreme temperatures that exist at the Bakersfield location of Amtrak’s new end-of-the-line station – they can vary from very hot to very cold – created some challenging mechanical, electrical and plumbing engineering considerations. By incorporating high efficiency glass and a high-efficiency air-conditioning system, it was possible to create an open space while maintaining energy-consciousness. Pre-conditioning the incoming outside air with exhaust air increased the efficiency of the HVAC system. The station is over 8,000 sf and includes a ticket counter, maintenance facility, repair shop, a vehicle cleaning and reclamation area, restrooms, office space, a conference/community room and parking for over 300 cars and 15 buses.
