Hyperion Environmental Learning Center

El Segundo, CA

This interactive learning center for students K-12 focuses on sustainable concepts and principals and resource replenishment. The project was an adaptive re-use of an existing 15,000 sf building and now contains two exhibit galleries, an auditorium and a classroom. The main gallery located on the first floor focuses on the water cycle. The second floor exhibit gallery focuses on the issues related to solid waste. Enhancing the visitor’s understanding of sustainable design are external features including a green roof, photovoltaic panels, a solar hot water heater, a wind turbine, a bioswale and stream, and xeriscaping. GBE provided mechanical and plumbing design as well as LEED CX for this innovative project. This building is pursuing LEED Gold certification.
