Described as the “gold standard” in radiosurgery, a Gamma Knife is the preferred treatment for brain tumors. Cedars-Sinai’s installation of a Gamma Knife treatment room, cobalt container and loading machine required a renovation including a redesign of the HVAC and electrical systems. The machine does not require special cooling but air intake and exhaust were reconfigured to prevent the expelling of contaminated air. In addition, plumbing was redistributed to avoid the enormous 8.5-ton weight load of the machine. Other GBE MEP design projects for Cedars-Sinai include renovation of the non-invasive cardiology laboratory, laboratory expansion, the OR/MRI rooms, a minimally-invasive surgery area and electrical design for the conversion of a Surgery/MRI room in the Professional Tower Building.
