University of California at Los Angeles – Rieber Dining Hall

Los Angeles, CA

Rieber Dining Hall on the UCLA campus is nearing the end of its lifecycle. The proposed renovation makes sweeping changes in order to increase operational efficiencies and customer service. The project strives to optimize seating arrangements, renovate service areas and work stations and replace equipment. The plans include redesigning the entry, updating food storage equipment and providing modernized food and beverage service venues. Undertaking the renovation of the Rieber Dining Hall concurrently with the renovation of its neighboring residence hall will decrease traffic during construction.

Occidental College

Los Angeles, CA

The college, established in 1887, is one of the oldest liberal arts colleges on the West Coast. It is known for rigorous academic standards and its scenic campus, and more recently as a college attended by the President of the United States. As improvements have become necessary in recent years, GBE has participated by completing the MEP design for the Rush Gymnasium renovation and the Bell Field and Coons Road parking lots.

Mount San Antonio College

Walnut, CA

The project consists of a main lab building and two smaller buildings. GBE’s mechanical design for this project had to take in many considerations as it involves a lab building with fume hoods. Fume hoods move air so quickly that the seamless design and controls of the air supply are imperative. Phoenix valves were used as opposed to the typical VAV box system. By adding the energy recovery unit, the amount of heating hot water needed from the central plant was reduced by a third.

Pierce College South of Mall

Woodland Hills, CA

The Pierce College South of Mall area consists of numerous buildings constructed during the 1940s. The renovation of that area includes various improvements to those structures including the performing arts building, the music and fine arts building, the business education building and College Services Center. Several challenges existed on this project; namely, the lack of as-built drawings made determining the capacity of the existing infrastructure difficult. During demolition, GBE worked closely with the design team, facility manager and contractor to assess the existing conditions and provide the most cost-effective solutions to meet budget constraints and new code compliance.

Debbie Allen Dance Academy

Baldwin Hills, CA

The existing restaurant building was converted to a dance studio complete with offices for staff, locker rooms, and 4 large dancing studios. GBE provided day lighting via skylights and large windows for both the lighting and HVAC design for maximum comfort and sustainability in the building. Additionally, expressive and efficient artwork lighting was installed to highlight displays along the walls of the studio.

Van Nuys High School

Van Nuys, CA

Opened in 1914, Van Nuys High School was only one of three high schools in the San Fernando Valley and served a rural community. In the intervening eight decades, society has undergone remarkable social and technological changes. These changes have necessitated that schools undergo a transformation in order to prepare their students for an increasingly demanding and complicated world. GBE is participating in this transformation: implementing design changes that will comply with today’s technological, environmental and safety standards.

Wilson High School

Los Angeles, CA

Woodrow Wilson Senior High has been in an almost constant state of change since its inception in the 1930s. As the huge metropolis of Los Angeles has evolved, so has Wilson High. In Wilson’s ongoing endeavor to stay at the forefront of educational development, GBE is proud to assist this institution in its resolve to “Go Green” and enhance its existing systems.
